Can I work with a student visa in Canada?

Can I work with a student visa in Canada?
I'm hoping to go to a university in Canada one day and I'm an American. I'm completely financially independent, working slightly above minimum wage, so there's no way for me to save up enough money to sustain living in Canada without a job. If I'm on a student visa, will I be able to apply for a job in Canada?

I really don't know. But I had a problem at customs once when I was doing a trade-show and they said I had to have a work permit to enter the country. It was a real hassle. They might require you to have that. Ask the Canadian government.

www.cic.gc.ca is the immigration website and you can probably find your answer there. My guess is that, on a student visa, you can't work except for something like student teaching through the university.

Yes, you can work while on a student visa. However, it is not quite as simple as finding a job and starting work. In order to work off-campus, you need to be a full-time student that has studied in Canada for at least one year and you must apply for a work permit through the CIC. If your application is approved, you are only eligible to work up to 20 hours per week while school is in session (and full-time during breaks and the summer). There is a $150 fee to apply for the work permit. You will also need to get a Social Insurance Number (SIN), the Canadian equivalent of an SSN, to be able to work. Check out this FAQ for more details: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/faq/study/index.asp You can also work on-campus without a work permit.
