How soon before class starts can one get a student visa in Canada?
If I want to attend class in fall 2011 could I apply for a student visa now and move there this spring or summer?

I think student visas are only for when you are actively attending school there, so to answer your question simply, no you can't. You have to apply for your school and get accepted and then go through the visa part then.

If you are indian then you should have dual citizenship. If your wife is "married" to you then she should also have the right to come to Canada, unless she has a criminal record.

Possible to obtain residency in Canada as a student?
Is it possible to get all the residency documents to study in Canada on a 2.7 high school GPA from a charter school in the US??? Medical school?
Other - Canada - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
no. to immigrate to canada you must be a skilled worker you can get a student visa to study but you will pay international student fees
2 :
What you need to do is apply to a college or university and get accepted, then apply for a student visa. The grade point average is the concern of the college, not immigration. Most colleges do not go just by your grade point average, but on the scores on whatever college entrance exam they use. with that grade point avg., you would need to do very well on the entrance exam.
3 :
You have to ask the college in Canada to which you are thinking of applying. However a 2.7 GPA will not get you any special attention and you would have to pay the full shot. And to get into med school, you generally need a 3.3 to 3.5 GPA for your undergrad degree.

Can an American be a transfer student in Canada?

Can an American be a transfer student in Canada?
I live in the US but I would like to transfer to Canada for a year, maybe? I think it's called transfer. Maybe it's an exchange? Well, it's when you go to a different country and you live with a different family for a period of time to learn about their culture and traditions and etc. Does anyone know if that's possible? And any information would be nice. Even a website. :) Thank you~
Studying Abroad - 1 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
why yes it's possible and there are many Canadian schools that offer tranfer programs. My school for instance set up a transfer program with a school in France. Just talk to your guidance councilor. Your school will have to set it up for you, unless you want to do a summer work exchange, which I know exists for Ontario students wanting ot go to Quebec to practice french. Bottom line, talk to your teachers, especially your guidance councilor who should be able to set you up with at least a website or name of a program where you can do a summer exchange.

The Canada Student Loans Program and the Canada Student Grants Program help by providing student financial assistance in the form of loans and grants to Canadians attending post-secondary education in most provinces and territories. The website is http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca.Loans – money that you pay back Grants – money that you do not pay back The federal government’s student loans and grants make it easier for Canadian students and families to obtain a post-secondary education. Post-secondary education opens doors by providing better job opportunities. More Canadians are investing in their future by pursuing post-secondary education. Hoping that this will help you.

Is it possible to change a visitor visa to student visa or work permit from within Canada?

Is it possible to change a visitor visa to student visa or work permit from within Canada?
My friend intends to travel to Canada on a visit visa and stay with his relatives (Permanent Residents). He wants to change his visitor visa to student visa or work permit from within Canada itself, basically settle down there and become permanent resident. What needs to be done and how. If you have similar experience in this regard or have heard of it, please reply.

I think your best bet would be to call Immigration Canada directly to find out about this as you will not be able to get an answer you can rely on here on this forum. Your friend should NOT try to stay in Canada illegally as he will find himself jeopardizing any future chances of immigrating legally in the future. The short-term gain is not worth the long-term pain, believe me! If he stays illegally and is eventually deported, he will find it pretty much impossible to EVER come again in the future as he will have blown his chances. An illegal immigrant does not find it easy to locate "under the table" work in Canada and he would not be able to attend for post-secondary education in Canada if he does not have legal status to be here.
2 :
He will have to live in Canada for 3 full years before he can apply for citizenship and must work at least 1 year of that..I checked on moving there..If he's interested in school, let me know..I have a contact person..if not he should search the web under "ways to become a Canadian citizen" and it will tell him who to contact. gl
3 :
Yeah it can be done but knowing the way immigration operates it will probably cost ya $2000 extra dollars

You should consider whether this is a good use of your time and money. Fashion is frivolous, and most "graduates" can't make a decent career in the field — working for minimum wage until they finally give up and start making sandwiches for Subway. Choose a serious degree from a serious school.

Do you have a portfolio of your work? Also make sure you can afford to live (apt rent, food, entertainment, school supplies) in addition to tuition.

Whats the best city in canada for a student to live in?

Whats the best city in canada for a student to live in?
After i finish high school here in the US, i would like to move and study in canada (and never come back to the USA!). I can speak english, spanish and french. The only problem is that i don't have alot of money. Also, are canadians racist to latinos/hispanics?

2 :
I'd say Toronto is your best bet. And no, we are not racist to anyone lol.
3 :
Toronto. A wonderful city with a low crime rate.
4 :
Edmonton! Because the best school ever, the University of Alberta, is located there.
5 :
I don't know too much, but Calgary,(Alberta), Edmonton, (Alberta) Vancouver (BC) and Ottawa have all tons of choices for school and lots of languages to learn.
6 :
Best city...cities like Toronto and Vancouver are good unless you want a French-speaking city then Quebec or Montreal. All other cities are smaller and I generally don't recommend them (though I live in one). Are Canadians racist to latinos/hispanics? I would say no. You do find some racism but nothing that you won't find anywhere else. If you're thinking about moving to Canada, don't worry about the racism it's not big here.
7 :
I am Canadian and no we aren't racist to latinos/hispanics at all! I mean we are a multicultural country remember that! :) A good place to go to is London, Ontario, Canada. It is a city with a lot of multi cultures their. It has a excellent university andcollegee their. University of Western Ontario and FanshawaCollegee. London isn't expensive at all I live near their. If you go to Toronto, Ontario everything is expensive your best bet is to go to London Ontario. It is close to the border as well. Remember Canadians aren't racist people (well their are racist in evercountriess) but we are Peacekeepers! :) I hope you come and live in Canada! Rebekka
8 :
trust me, you dont wanna go there.. if you wanna leave the country, go to ireland or sweden. in canada, you're gonna end up sayin something to someone, they'll be offended, and you'll get sued for all your tuition money.... and you'll get taxed the crap out of
9 :
Vancouver is lovely! Wonderful people, breath taking views, cost of living somewhat similar to living in the California, Seattle region. Though Toronto is not to be pushed aside either. Take a vacation and feel it out if possible, Good luck to you in all your endeavors. http://best-city-reviews.com/index.php/2008/10/best-cities-of-canada/ -Mae.
10 :
Toronto, Vancouver and Victoria. Toronto and Vancouver are more cultually diverse , though, so don't worry about racism. There are always a few but for the most part we don't have problems. If you like us we like you. I think you should move to Canada and never look back. It's the best.
11 :
London Ontario is the place to go University of Western Ontario or Fanshawe College both very good and respected schools in canada (especially Western) nice city, not too big, not too small huge student population 2hours from the border (detriot or buffalo)
12 :
There are many factors to consider: 1. Your nationality vis-a-vis an area you can live in a stress free environment without the worries of racism and have a latino community. Answer to this is either Vancouver or Toronto. 2. Work - both cities are probably good for employment and right now, Ontario is hit real bad, where Vancouver is not. So, a job in Vancouver may be easier to get than Toronto. 3. Climate: Vancouver has the best in Canada and is overall the warmest during the winter season. 4. Cost of living: Both are high but if you can't get a part time job while in school in one, you may as well go to the city you can get work in. Right now with Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics coming, some housing costs are going up, but that is in the downtown Vancouver area. 5. If you speak French, you may also want to consider Montreal or Quebec City . . .housing costs there are more affordable.
13 :
Halifax is supposed to be a good university town - low rents, plenty of students, weather not too bad.
14 :
Canadians are not racist (sauf perhaps a small portion, but that's like that everywhere). Most of the major cities have high proportions of people from other parts of the world. Good cities for students, would be Toronto, Calgary, Montreal or Vancouver. All large cities, great school systems, good employment opportunities.

You would have to apply for a study permit. This website of Citizenship and Immigration Canada explains most of it http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/student.asp. If it were me though, I would start off by contacting the school you want to attend. Most Canadian schools already know the ins and outs of study permits and would most likely be pretty helpful. As for your mother, she would have to get a visa (max. of 6 months) or a work permit.
2 :
You may find the school system different from what you are used to. We have no such thing as an O level school(I don't even know what you mean by that). We have public, private and Catholic high schools. most Canadian attend public high school and they are not divided into levels. Best of luck.

Going from student visa to citizen in Canada?

Going from student visa to citizen in Canada?
If I get a student visa to go from UK to Canada to study for three years, will I then be eligible to apply for citizenship? If not, does anyone know of a way to get Canadian citizenship? You know, without having to get married etc!
Immigration - 1 Answers

under the canadian experience category you must graduate from an approved course of study and then get a work permit and work for 12 months at a full time job in Canada. Once you have worked for 12 months then you are eligible to APPLY for PR status. You must then continue working on the work permit while the PR application is being processed (currently taking about 2 years). Once you get approved for PR you then MUST LIVE in Canada as a PR for 3 years before you are eligible to apply for citizenship. Citizenship is currently taking 18 months to be processed. so altogether it take anywhere up to12 years to get citizenship from the time you begin studying a 4 years course at a Canadian university. And you dont have to be married for any of this process. Getting married gets you PR status within 1 to 2 years and then citizenship within 4 to 5 years after that.

It might. For a student visa, you have to prove you are going back at the end of your studies. If you are leaving a spouse behind, they might see that as proof. If you are taking spouse with you, not proof.
2 :
Sadly, it likely will affect negatively your application. The Canadian immigration authorities are always watchful of people who are coming to Canada for education, than try to establish landed immigrant status and bring over many relatives.

You, as an American citizen, can easily go to Canada...you do not need a visa, just a passport. Your friend who is on a student visa in Canada may or may not need a visa to enter the U.S. If he is from a country on the visa waiver list, he does not needs a visa to come to the U.S. He does need to register for the ESTA program. See the 1st and 2nd sites. He may need permission to leave Canada ..people in the U.S. on a student visa must get permission and a special form from the International Students office of the college or university where they are studying, so he needs to go to the similar office at his school and ask. If he is not from a visa waiver country, he would need to apply for a b-2 tourist visa. See lower half of 3rd site for info on how he can apply for a visa. If he needs a visa...it would be far easier for you to go visit him.

1 - If you studied and resided legally in Canada for at least one year and you have a previous work experience of at least one year in a skilled occupation, you may apply for permanent residence under category 3 of the federal skilled workers program. You will have to first submit your application to the centralized Intake Unit in Sidney Nova Scotia. If you application is recommended for further processing you have the choice of having it forwarded to the visa office responsible for your country of citizenship or to the Buffalo visa office. Please note that you will still have to go through the point system and accumulate the minimum of 67 points. The point system is based on education, work experience, knowledge of English and/or French, Age and adaptability. http://www.immig.ca/study 2 - If you don't have previous work experience and have studied in Canada and completed your study program, you may apply for an open post graduation work permit, which will allow you to work and gain the work experience that will allow you to qualify for permanent residence later. Please note that a study program of less than 2 years will give you the right to a work permit with a validity equivalent to the length of your studies (e. 8 months program = 8 months open work permit. However, If your program is a 2 years or more long, you will get a 3 year work permit. 3 - If you study in Canada and then work in a skilled occupation for at least one year, you may apply under the Canadian Experience Class which is considered a much faster way for gaining permanent residence. Note: If you are a graduate student and have worked in-Campus as an MA or TA on a full time basis for one continuous year or part time for two continuous years, you may use that work experience to apply for permanent residence under the federal skilled workers program.

I applied and got approved for BC and Canada Student loan last year. However, my first year is up. I will be continuing education this September again as a second year student. Do we need to reapply for the loans to get funds again or is it automatically done ? Thanks alot.

I believe you have to re-apply unless things have changed. I live in Alberta and I had to for my 2nd year. However check your documentation of your student loan and it should say it on there if your loan includes both years or not. If it doesn't then you'll will have to re-apply.

If your wife is a full-time student you will be qualified for a work permit for the same time frame as her study permit. You must apply. This is the Canadian Government Immigration site - there is no need to pay lawyers or consultants to make your application. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/work-spouse.asp
2 :
It is better you seek advice of some expert consultants, it will help you in all legal matters of your travel to Canada. Search on google, you will find many service providers of visa to Canada. For your convenience here is a link http://www.immigrationtocanada.org/

It actually depends on your citizenship. If you hold a passport of one of the 36 countries which apply to the U.S. Visa Waiver Program you will just need to get an Arrival/Departure Record Form I-94W at the Canadian - U.S. land border at a fee of US$6.00. If you plan to take a flight the fee will be included in the flight ticket, however you will need to get a prior approval [ESTA] online free of charge at least three days prior to travel.. http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/id_visa/esta/ .. Citizens who can make use of this program are passport holders of: Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland. Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom. An e-passport with a microchip is required for citizen of the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Slovakia, or South Korea. http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/without/without_1990.html .. Special entry procedures [without visa] are also granted for passport holders of Bermuda. http://www.travel.state.gov/visa/temp/without/without_1260.html#4 .. Based on the Compact of Free Association Act passport holders of the Marshall Island, Micronesia, or Palau are also granted visa-free stay. http://www.uscis.gov/files/pressrelease/Compacts_FS_021105.pdf .. http://www.uscis.gov/files/pressrelease/PalauFS21Jun07.pdf .. Passport holders of all other countries are required to obtain a prior visa to enter the United States. The visa application involves a fee of US$140; for certain countries an additional visa issue fee is levied bases on reciprocal visa fees for U.S. citizen. http://travel.state.gov/visa/frvi/reciprocity/reciprocity_3272.html ..

I will be an International Student in Canada, my GF is Canadian resident, how does the marriage process work?
I will be getting to Canada end of summer, and I wanted to know if I get married to my GF who is a resident, how does the process work of becoming legal, and how long? Thanks in advance ...

1 :
You go the a church and say "I do". Than you file for a legal alien status which will over time become a permanent situation.
2 :
your GF would have to qualify to sponsor you to immigrate
3 :
The sponsorship information can be found at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/spouse.asp It's unlikely that your GF will be denied to sponsor if she is over 18, isn't on social assistance and doesn't have a criminal record. You will have to prove to immigration that the relationship is real though. Start collecting data. How did you meet, what souvenirs do you have of your relationship, trips taken together, photos etc. Do you have a joint lease, joint bank account, any joint bills. Do you have phone bills from the time you started dating. All this adds up. When sponsorship applications are denied, it's usually because immigration doesn't believe it's a real marriage. You will have 2 ways to apply for sponsorship called inland and outland. Inland is when you state that you are living in Canada and request your file to be processed in Canada. This actually takes longer and you are not advised to travel while it's in process. It may take you 1-2 years to get permanent residency this way. If you apply outland, you state yourself as officially not living in Canada and request your file to be processed in your homeland. If your student visa is issued for a 1 year or more, you can also ask for it to be processed where you live which is in Canada although they will then send it to the US since they don't process outland files in Canada. This method should get you PR within several months, see average times at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/international/05-fc-spouses.asp

Congratulations and welcome! You'll find it's a pretty cool city -- I've lived here all my life and I've got few complaints. The English page for Citizenship and Immigration Canada is located at the link below. You'll be looking for the section marked "Study" In Canada, Immigration is a federal department (although for the purposes of educational programmes and requirements you can divide the guidelines for study into Quebec and the rest of the country. I think the site outlines a few requirements, namely: - If you're a student then you should already have an idea of which institution you'll be attending, and (ideally) have already been accepted. If this is the case, then the institution's website may have resources to aid you in applying for a study permit and/or a student visa (after all, for them to get your money they really should help you to *arrive*) - Either a student visa or a study permit would be required to enter the country for your purposes. It does say that "If you are from the United States, Saint-Pierre et Miquelon or Greenland, you can apply at the point of entry when you arrive in Canada." That being said, however, they may wish for you to satisfy the requirements of a visitor / tourist for the duration of the application period (i.e. if you intend to stay for 8-10 weeks at a minimum, you should have enough money to support yourself for that length of time *and* be able to satisfy the Immigration people that you would be leaving either after the completion of your studies or after the end of your application processing, should it be rejected. It'll also mean having the rest of your travel documents in order, etc.) There is a section of the site (under Study --> How to apply --> Apply Online) where you can apply online (and, let's be fair, anything electronic is likely to be faster than a paper application) and that may be worth looking into. So have a look at the site, get all of your papers together, and we'll see you soon. Factoid: On a per-capita basis, Halifax has the highest density of universities per square kilometre of any city in North America. Coincidentally (or consequently -- whichever) it's reported to have the highest density of licensed drinking establishments.
2 :
Can't you get your student visa to be expedited somehow or get some type of temporary visa paperwork? If I were you I would not wait until reaching the border to sort this stuff out. The state of immigration nowadays where the most desirable countries to immigrate are tightening up their security and restrictions it would be wise to have your visa beforehand.
3 :
I think student visa is mandatory. But it would be better, if you seek of some advisor providing such services. Someone has mentioned Goldman Associates for a similar question.

Is it possible for a canadian international medical student to get a residency in Canada ? I am planning to do my residency in Canada , but i heard that my chances are 1 % and their exams for getting accepted in Canada is very difficult , is that true ? Thanks

Im a US med student and it is similar here but I heard it is even harder in Canada. They have a set number of residency spots available for international students. So you are competing with people from all over the world. That is why it is so difficult. The exams are hard and the system is designed to keep people out... only the best are allowed in. Now some good news is that the language barrier holds a lot of people back. So if you are fluent in English than you have a step up on many people. So yes it is possible but it is hard because there are so many people and so few spots.

Immigrating to US from Canada as student?

Immigrating to US from Canada as student?
Hello, right now I am in my first year in college in BC, Canada. I want to transfer to a college in US (Chicago). Suppose I do that and finish the college after a couple of years in Chicago. Will I be able to apply for green card to become permanent resident and, eventually, US citizen? Or will I have to go back to Canada after graduating the college? I really want to move to Chicago to live with my best friend.

First of all, you need to get admitted to US college and get I-20 issued for you. With I-20, you can apply for F1 Student visa at US Embassy in your country. http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1268.html After the graduation, you must find a sponsor who will petition your green card, either immediate family member or US Employer who will hire you. With only Bachelor's degree, it will be very difficult for US Employer willing to go through multi process of sponsoring you for green card. Choose a major that is high demand skilled work. http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/types/types_1326.html
2 :
You have to apply for an student visa. To get an greencard you need to find a company that wants to sponsor you. Its not easy.
3 :
After you graduate you can work there for 1 year for training purposes. In that time you have to find an employer willing to apply for an H-1B visa for you. Then when you are on an H-1B, the employer applies for a green card for you. Or you can look for a job and then get a TN Visa which is good for only three years but is super easy for a Canadian to get. And you can get more as long as you express intent to return to Canada some day. But you cannot apply for a green card on one. Or you find a US citizen to get married to. And be aware to go to school in the US, to get your F-1 visa you will have to prove you have access to $20,000 each year. Though you can still get about $10,000 a year in Canadian student loans.

What is the cost of living per month in Canada for a student?

What is the cost of living per month in Canada for a student?
Hi! i m nabil. I work in Dubai and looking forward to study in canada. I want to know the average living expense Rent, Food and stuff like that.
Other - Canada - 5 Answers

Very expensive.
2 :
Depends on where you are looking to stay. What University are you interested in? Toronto for example, is very expensive for rent. You can easliy pay $900 a month for a small bachelor apartment. Something like St. Catherine's, on the other hand, you can pay as little as $400 a month in rent. Food and things like that are pretty much the same across the board. It's reasonably expensive ($5-10 per meal, depending on where you shop and what kinds of food you like).
3 :
Hi Nabil What University do you plan to study at? The cost of living in Halifax - Dalhousie University eg will be very different to that in Vancouver - UBC. Montreal - McGill would be something else again. And are you looking to living in the university dorm or is a room acceptable or would you prefer an apartment. If an apartment, alone or with a roommate? Do you want a place very close to the campus or are you willing to travel in order to get a less expensive place? With so little information, I do not think anyone can give you really pertinent information. There are Universities all over Canada and the cost of living in each province is anywhere from somewhat different to extremely different in each one. And by comparison with the UAE, Canada is a huge place. So maybe you can add some details above to help people give you useful answers. :o) BTW The Universities I have mentioned are just examples. Many Canadian cities have more than one university.
4 :
Where are you studying?
5 :
I go to school in waterloo. my rent the last two years was $360 without utilities, and this year is $400 without utilities. I spend around $40 on utilities/month, and $30 on food, but I don't eat at restaurants a lot and I get bulk food. One of my best friends is in Halifax and pays around $450 inclusive for rent dorm is completely different, usually a bit more expensive and has food included

if an international student in Canada because of low grades gets kicked out of university does that international student have to leave the country or can stay in the country for as long as they have the student visa or apply for a work permit?
Studying Abroad - 2 Answers

1 :
Without a school, your student visa immediately becomes void. The work permit also becomes void as it is dependent on the student visa. You won't be granted a work permit if you've been kicked out of university. If you are kicked out of one university and do not find a new one to study at in a short amount of time, your visa is no longer good and it is no longer legal for you to remain in Canada.
2 :
Belie is correct, xoxo; you can't stay in a country as a non-student if your papers that permitted you entry require you to be a student to enter. It works both ways, the same is true for international students in your country.

No, you have to arrive on time. You need to call the University or school's foreign student office and get them to put pressure on CIC. I'm assuming you have an acceptance letter. They can get more done than you can overseas, but it wouldn't hurt to call the responsible consulate or High Commission and put a little pressure on them. Be persistent but polite, as long as you're calm and polite, Canadians will want to help you.
