Is it hard for an international student to get into a medicine program in Canada?
I want to study medicine in Canada but I heard its hard to get into the program because there's limited places for international students. If not, what are the top medicine universities in Canada?

There are many, many universities in Canada from coast to coast that offer programs in medicine. They will all give you a medical degree after 5 - 6 years from which you go on to internship, mostly at hospitals for about 5 years. After that you will become a registered MD, and free to seek work wherever you wish. The average age of newly minted MDs is in the early 30s. You have to pass entrance exams and be academically accepted, irregardless of which country you come from. If you are really good, you may get some bursaries to help pay for the education. OSAP (Ontario) or other provincial student loans may be available to you but they will NOT be enough to live and study on. You could work but that will probably take too much time and not pay enough, anyway. You need an outside source of funds (rich parents?) to complete your degree. As an immigrant from ANY country, you have to apply for a student visa here. No exceptions. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/index.asp

Can an F-1 student who has applied for permanent residency in the united states, travel to Canada for a week?
I am an F-1 student studying in the US. Last year my wife applied for my permanent residency in the US. I am planning to travel to Canada for a week's visit. Would I be able to do that? My concern is that if I go to Canada, will the US authorities allow me to get back into the US or will they directly tell to go back to my home country since I have applied for an immigration......

Leaving the country can jeopardize your application for permanent residency. You should really contact the office you sent your application to.

If you have applied for, but not yet received, permanent residency, then you are imperilling your application by leaving the country.
3 :
If you are in the process of applying for permanent residency, you better not to leave the country until you got the paper.

How can an Indian grad-student immigrate to Canada?

How can an Indian grad-student immigrate to Canada?
I am 22 y.o. / live in India. Completed my Bachelors in Commerce last year and will complete my Masters in Commerce in 2011. I have no work experience and want to immigrate to Canada after this. How can I come to Canada and start working there in 2011 or 2012 latest?
Immigration - 2 Answers

I would assume your education should be sufficient to find the governmental website about immigration (hint: google Canada immigration)? Canada has a point system and while it may take you a few minutes to find the actual link where you can calculate the number of points you currently get, it is on the official website. Do the self-test and then see whether you need an employer in order to be able to immigrate to Canada or if you don't.
2 :
You definitely will NOT be in Canada by 2012 so dont plan on it. You must have a job that is in demand and you MUST have a MINIMUM of ONE full year (12 months or 50 weeks) working in that job before you are even ELIGIBLE to apply to immigrate so you cannot apply the day after your graduate.

Since you should buy the insurance before you come, you'd probably be better off checking around where you live to see what's available. Maybe your regular health care coverage can be extended to Canada if you pay more. I've bought travel insurance here in Canada for when I was going to the US and it wouldn't cover a simple visit to a doctor. It had at least a $500 deductible. Canadian health insurance companies such as Blue Cross don't, as far as I know, offer basic health insurance here because hardly anyone one needs it. They do sell coverage for things that aren't covered by government health plans in Canada.

How do you calculate your overall student average(Ontario, Canada)?

How do you calculate your overall student average(Ontario, Canada)?
So far, I've added all my marks from my transcript and divided by the number of classes I've taken. Is this the correct way to calculate the student average? I'd like to know because I plan on applying to universities and I don't know what average they might be talking about. Is it overall student average or like the American GPA?
Primary & Secondary Education - 2 Answers

1 :
well...average is the assumed constant value for the total entries of the data...!! u just simply add the observations...divide by the number of observations....got the avarage...!! if u are asking about the average of many averages, do the same.....addd up the averages and divide by the number of averages....but all averages must be similar in concern and purpose....
2 :
Well, Universities usually look at your average from grade 12 and maybe grade 11.. Not your overall average from grade 9 - 12. So for your grade 11 average you'd add all 8 then divide by 8, same with grade 12. But you don't mix marks from one grade and another :) It's the same as the American GPA but theirs is done differently. So for example, if you've heard of Trent University.. they have a deal where if your average is 90% + then they pay your tuition. But the 90% average is only from your grade 12 year.

The university sites will have a section for International students which will explain the requirements to gain entry http://www.australian-universities.com/ You will need to obtain a Student Visa. Details for this are at http://www.immi.gov.au/ This will, explain what is required to obtain a student visa. The standards of most Australian universities are good. Most universities are in the capital cities of the Australian states. As a foreign student in Australia you may find it easier to adjust in a University that is in Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane where there are a significant number of students from Chinese-speaking backgrounds.

Going to Canada will not change your VWP status; a visa application from Canada will more less be rejected since U.S. consular officers stationed in Canada are able to assess your personal and economical ties to Canada (which you don't have) and to assess the genuineness of Canadian documents provided for the visa application. They are not able to assess your ties to Belgium or to check the genuineness of your Belgian documents..

Do i put the amount i received in student loans this year for tuition on my canada tax return?
Canada tax help I recieved a statement for my student loans and i was curious to know if i have to put the amount of the loan in my income tax return somewhere. This is the first year im doing my taxes and i cant figure this out. I know if you start paying interest you have to claim that. But i am still getting student loans for next year and therefore i wont be paying yet.
Canada - 2 Answers

1 :
No. Your school will send you (or make available for you to print out in some cases) a T2202A slip that contains the tuition you can claim on your taxes. You cannot put the value of your student loan on your taxes because for all they know you are spending half of it on beer and pretzels. The link I provided below has some useful tidbits from the accountants of Ontario for students who are doing their taxes. You should file for any previous year you were over 18 because you will get free money from the government.
2 :
The amount of the loan is between you and your lendor. The only thing you should be putting on your schedule 11 and provincial schedule 11 are the tuition amounts and fulltime/parttime months according to your T2202A from your education institution. Based on what most student's make, chances are that you won't use any of your tuition and have the option of transferring an amount to your parents/spouse/grandparents or keep it for the future.

Embassies & Consulates - 2 Answers

1 :
The visa issued in Canada seems to have been linked to your duration of authorized stay based on your Canadian temporary residence permit. The application from India requires to convince a visa Officer that you do not plan to immigrate and that you will have the financial assets to cover your up to six months stay in the United States for the next ten years [that's the regular validation of a U.S. visa issued in India]. If you have gotten a visa denial based on section 214b [US INA] because of lack of economic ties to your country it only makes sense to apply again if your situation has changed significantly. By U.S. law you may re-apply for a visa three days after the visa interview. The European visa application procedures are differrent since visa are issued based on the itinerary provided and their validity only covers the period of proposed travel..
2 :
First of all, you needed a "new" visa, not a renewal. Also, at the time you got a visa to US, you had presumably serious ties (school) elsewhere and obligations to be elsewhere within a specific time frame. You do not have those sorts of ties now. Give it a serious rest before attempting to obtain another visa to the US. Meanwhile, you need a job in India, and work long enough to accrue at least two weeks vacation time. Buy a home, or have family, investments, property, people and obligations which compel you to return home promptly to resume work and all when your 2 week vacation is up. Save your money. Then plan a 10-day trip to the US, have the itinerary, money, hotel reservations, et al lined up, and apply for a tourist visa for the 10 days. You should be able to get it. Having been declined, unless you address the specific issues underlying that declination, you will be declined again. Your countrymen have fouled things up for you - Indians have a perfectly wretched reputation for visa fraud, such as applying for tourist visas, then looking for work (which is actually visa fraud - obtaining a visa by claiming one purpose when you actually have some other purpose or intent).

Canadian education is cheap in general, but you're going to need to learn grammar and spelling first. Take an English 12 or equivalent course wherever you are and make sure you get an A in it. Good use of English is mandatory in Canada. You lack that. In Canada we have three tiers of education: College, University-College and University. College is the cheapest and it's the equivalent of your community college. You can get an education for $2,000/year. However if you go Canadian, it's better to go to University instead. For $3,000-$4,000 per year you can get the same level of education as a state university, and for $6,000 a year you get an Ivy-league equivalent. You just have to be exceptionally good to get in.

Alberta will be cheaper than Toronto. If you can economize--live in small quarters and eat cheaply, you can probably get by on $1200 Canadian per month. If you want your own apartment and to eat well, $2500.
2 :
Oh, I am not sure that Alberta will be cheaper than Toronto. Alberta is currently experiencing a major boom in their economy due to oil prices. Friends have moved from toronto to Edmonton and are sleeping in their van because rents on a bachelor (1 room) are over $1500/month -- if you can find one. Best thing for you to do is to contact the university where you plan to go and ask for the international student office or advisor. They are accustomed to assisting students from overseas and can tell you local prices and costs of living in a more realistic fashion than we can.

Yes, they can admit you as a student if they find no reason not to. If you were admitted at JFK after the explanation, there is no reason to be denied entry at VCV.
2 :
If Immigration at JFK has allowed you to return, I can't imagine why you'd be denied at a different immigration checkpoint. Bring your passport, of course, to show that you've been admitted to the US after the arrest and you should be fine.
3 :
Each and EVERY time you apply for admission to the United States, it is up to the alien to prove that they are admissible. That is the law under the Immigration and Naturalization Act (INA) aka Title 8.

"Do you have to be a student to get a working holiday visa for canada?"?
I am 29 years old and want to work in canada temporarily but am not a student or recently graduated. I also don't have a job to go to either. Am I able to get a visa like you can for Australia?
Immigration - 1 Answers

No, you can't get a working holiday visa. The United States do not offer general working holiday programs for Canadians, hence Americans cannot participate in this program offered by Canada since it is based on reciprocity. http://www.international.gc.ca/iyp-pij/country_incoming-pays_entrants.aspx .. The only program available is the Summer Work/Travel program which however requires to be a student.

student visa to permanent residence in canada?
if i am studying on a student visa in canada, and i get married, can i change to permament residence without leaving the country and without disrupting my studies?

I am a law student at the University of Ottawa, and happen to be taking an immigration law class right now. I should also say that if you want good legal advice, talk to a real lawyer, so take what I say with a grain of salt. The law you're interested is the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) and its associated regulations. The relevant clause is section 11 of IRPA, which notes that you do, in fact, need to leave the country to apply for permanent resident status (PR status). However, there is a new class of immigration (the "Canada Experience Class") for people who are already students in Canada who want to become permanent residents, which is more streamlined than some other methods. Honestly I don't know much about it, but you may be able to stay in Canada if you apply under this class. Talk to a lawyer. If you get married (or are in a conjugal relationship for one year), and you can satisfy an immigration officer that you did not get married mainly in order to get PR status, then your spouse/partner can sponsor you and speed up the process greatly, and avoid money requirements. Your sponsor must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (s. 13(1) IRPA) who is at least 18, resides in Canada, is not in jail, has not committed a serious crime, and is not on social assistance for a reason other than disability (s. 133(1) Regulations). Usually the sponsor must also have a minimum necessary income to support you, but there is an exception for spouses/partners (s. 133(4) Regulations). In order to get PR status, you also must not be "inadmissible" (defined in ss. 34-43 IRPA). There are three main categories of inadmissibility: (1) public safety / security (terrorists, criminals, people with infectious diseases); (2) public finances (people with serious medical conditions or who would end up on social assistance); and (3) people who lie on their immigration forms. It cannot be emphasized enough: do NOT lie about anything on your immigration forms, or you will be banned from Canada for up to two years. Hope this helps, -dhm.
2 :
Hello, After your marriage, you can apply for permanent residence in Canada without having to leave Canada. Please visit http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/spouse.asp for the guide and necessary forms. Thank you for your attention. Good luck.
3 :
if i am studying on a student visa in canada, and i get married, can i change to permament residence without leaving the country and without disrupting my studies? I think so assuming you are marrying a canadian citizen. you stay on the student visa as an international student in order to finish your program. You must still pay international fees. The canadian spouse must have a job or an income and they can apply for PR status for you. Applying as an inside application will take between 1 and 2 years to be processed.. If you finish your course you can apply for a post graduate work permit and get a job. (the canadian experience category) If at any time your work permit is denied, then you reapply as a visitor (because you have a PR application in process) and stay in Canada as a visitor (this is now the family class catefory) until you are landed as a PR. Please note that as a visitor you cannot work or study.

Question about travelling from Canada to US for Indian citizen with Candian student visa?

Question about travelling from Canada to US for Indian citizen with Candian student visa?
I am wondering if students who are having student visa in Canada but are from India can come into US for visit? If they can, what is the procedure and how do they apply for visa, how much will it cost? If not what is the cheapest way to travel between Toronto and Windsor? Any idea if they are eligible for the ISIC card which gives them student discount rate when travelling?

1- you will need a visa to enter the US 2- this july the rate for visa or any immigration services for the US will be change meaning+ (know this because my friend told that she wants to file for her citizenship before the rate is higher because the application will be $900.00) my advise to you is to call the US imbassador in India and ask them (that is if you are still in India) The cheapest way to travel from Toronto to Windsor probably is by boss or Train and when you call for the reservation ask them if you can have studend discounts Good luck

My graduate program at U of T (Medieval Studies) is more than half international students. I'm sure Psychology can handle an application from someone with an American degree. F1 Student visa holder in the US wants to immigrate to Canada by middle of next year after getting Bachelors?

F1 Student visa holder in the US wants to immigrate to Canada by middle of next year after getting Bachelors?
I am here on F-1 Student Visa. I got my Associates Degree last year and will be getting my Bachelor's next year. I want to immigrate to Canada permanently. Unfortunately I don't see any immigration category that best fits because I don't have years of work experience. What options are available? I also recently got nominated for Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Can that be of any advantage to me? Thanks a lot.
Immigration - 6 Answers

Please don't try to immigrate to Canada. Our economy is as bad as everyone else's and we are having a tough enough time finding jobs for our own citizens to then worry about immigrants. In January of this year, 129,000 Canadian jobs were lost with another 83,000 lost in February. Please, just until things improve stay where you are.
2 :
I do not see any solution for you. With the current job market, it is very difficult for foreigners with no experience to get a job in Canada or the US.
3 :
At the completion of your studies on a student visa, you must return to your own country. From there you can apply for jobs here. An employer would sponsor you. That is about your only alternative.
4 :
Get Work authorization first and work for a few months in US.
5 :
Get some experience in your field, either in the US or your home country and then apply for residency. You are not going to be approved by the middle of next year. There are about a million people in line ahead of you and many of them have sponsors, experience, needed skills, Canadian connections and money.
6 :
It depends on your degree. If it in in engineering or the sciences, it will be little problem. If it is a BA, there is no demand.

Maybe you can start your studies at a community college for the first two years and then transfer to the university. In this way you could save money at the beginning and use it for the next years. Otherwise, 16,000/year might not be enough anywhere (does this amount include living expenses?). Try to choose a place with a good university but not so high cost of living. Good luck!

Can I sponsor my husband to come to Canada if I'm a student?

Can I sponsor my husband to come to Canada if I'm a student?
Hello, I'm a 20 year old Canadian marrying an Irish man in August of this year. We are looking to start the immigration process for my future husband to join me in Canada as soon as possible. I'm wondering what the financial requirements are to become a sponsor of your spouse. Since I'm a student, I have not had a job in the last year. Will I still be able to sponsor my husband?
Immigration - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
In order to sponsor anyone, you need to prove that you are financially able to do that. Not working and not having an income, I do not see that that is a possibility.
2 :
hi there! myself (scottish) and my wife (canadian) are hoping to do the same thing and when we called an advice line we were told that it may not be viable. butttt they also said that it's not written in stone in their rules and it could depend on who is dealing with your request! So basically as clear as mud.... My wife isn't a student but she's "travelling" over here (she's on a worker holiday visa so we can be together while it's sorted out) so hence we have the same problem as she isn't working either! i've actually just asked the same question on here as well in the hope someone could give me a concrete answer, probably we're in the same situation as yourself with not wanting to be apart as well! So the only advice I can give you is to maybe do what we are..... giving it a try and if it gets knocked back get your husband over there on a worker holiday visa so you can at least be together and get yourself in a job as soon as you can so you can apply to sponsor him again! hope this helps if not at least you know there's others out there suffering with the same problem!
3 :
There is no income requirement to sponsor a spouse, unless you live in Quebec. You can be a student and sponsor a spouse. Please ignore the other answers, they are incorrect. Your spouse cannot go on any type of government assistance (i.e. welfare) if they do, then you will be required to pay that back. Your spouse can work as soon as they land and get their SIN. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/spouse-apply-how.asp#step2
4 :
Hello, To be able to sponsor someone, you need to prove that you have enough finances to do so. you will probably need a job to prove you have an income. But as Irish citizen your husband will be able to Canada first, just for a visit without any problems and then you could start working on it.

You can get university loans (scholarships) or apply for gov't loans...
2 :
Try checking out www.internationalstudent.com. It has several references and suggest different plans for your interest.
3 :
Students who are looking for a bad credit student loan should pick three schools they are most interested in, talk to the admissions office, and ask what is needed to apply in their school.A bad credit<!--student loan is payable only after the student has completed his or her education, and has started earning a certain minimum amount. You can find more information on Student Loan here, http://badcredits.awardspace.com/student-loans.htm The minimum amount that the candidate of the bad credit student loan is required to earn has also increased. Bad credit student loans are available as both secured and unsecured loans-->depending on whether you are a homeowner or not. The rate of interest to be paid on unsecured bad credit student loans is higher than that on secured bad credit student loans. This is because the secured bad credit student loans are backed by your home as a security.

You would have to apply using the normal methods as all other landed immigrants. Having a degree and having already been in Canada is a major bonus. If you can find an employer willing to offer you a job and wait several months for a temporary work visa to be issued then you would be laughing. More information at www.cic.gc.ca
2 :
Nope. Foreign students have study permits in order to study in Canada and are expected to go home once their studies are done. From your home country you can then apply to immigrate but it won't be a simple or cheap venture. Even if you do qualify, there are so few jobs for our own people as it is that companies won't be so keen on hiring a foreigner.

How long does it take to qualify as a "local student" in Canada?

How long does it take to qualify as a "local student" in Canada?
Does one have to be a citizen? Or is permanent residency visa enough? (If yes then for how many years does one have to be a permanent resident to qualify as a local student.) (Local students pay the same fee as other locals or citizens. Whereas international students pay 3-4 times more.)
Immigration - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
when granted permanent residency you are classed as a local for education, but getting PR is very difficult
2 :
You can be a PR to pay "local fees" but you generally have to have filed at least ONE tax return in order to qualify for a student loan. So maybe one year at the most. Certainly 3 months MINIMUM. The only rule that most provinces have regrading residency is you must live in Canada for 3 months before you become eligible for the health card. I would think the same rule applies for students as well. BUT this rules does NOT apply to Quebec - Quebec does have a 3 year residency rule before you can start paying local fees. .
3 :
You have to be a legal resident for one whole year to pay local fees. The application process takes two years if you are accepted. However, to immigrate you need a skill or trade in demand in Canada and at least a year's work experience in your own country.

As a mother i was devastated, owing to the fact that i just lost my husband a few years ago, so i started looking for money, because my job was not paying enough to cover my son's bill, i looked for help from family and friends but there was non coming, i went to the bank and was told that, they could not grant me a loan, because i had no colateral. finally, just as i gave up hope but someone introduce me to Mr,Lim Koh who helped me you can contact him on limloansfirm23@yahoo.com for your loan today. thanks for reading my testimony, God bless all the good people.

NO. You CANNOT do that. You must remain in the U.S. to use the student loans. Face it, you're not moving to Canada. It's EXTREMELY hard to immigrate to Canada, you need to have a bachelor's degree or higher, you have to take this really hard test, basically unless you're a scientist or some sort of outstanding doctor, you won't be allowed to immigrate to Canada, just as it is for immigration to the U.S. It's a pipe dream buddy. Give up and move on. Besides, you don't want to live in Canada because trust me, it isn't what it seems. I lived there for a while and hated it.

At least $100,000 CDN.
2 :
You have to prove you have sufficient funds for all of your school expenses (tuition, fees, books & supplies, room & board if living in the dorms on campus, etc), plus all of your living expenses (rent, utilities & household expenses if not living in dorms during the school term, insurance, transportation, personal expenses, food, etc), plus transportation back to your own country. School expenses of course depend on which school you go to. Living expenses in Toronto are among the highest in Canada - you will need at least C$3000/month for rent, utilities, groceries, household expenses at the very least, more if you need a car to get around, plus insurance, gas, maintenance and repairs.
3 :
you have to be able to pay all the fees, books and study materials for the course you are doing - and for international students they can be as much as $50,000 (and more sometimes) per year - it depends on the course. you also have to have money to LIVE ON while you are studying - $30,000 per year is good. It has to cover rent, food, clothes, utities, bills, transport, entertainment, medical requirements, etc etc plus money to get home with after you graduate. Shulliche - that really should be the Schulich School of Business at York University - assuming you want to do an MBA http://www.schulich.yorku.ca/ssb-extra/ssb.nsf?open
4 :
You have to prove you can pay the fees, which are about double for international students, buy books, pay for private health insurance and live. $10 000 should cover everything except tuition fees
5 :
$0.69c
