Do people living in Canada with a worker or student visa get free health care?

Do people living in Canada with a worker or student visa get free health care?
I'm from the United States, and I might try to apply for college at McGill. Do foreigners living in Canada get the same health care as citizens, or is it limited for foreigners?
Immigration - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
It's limited to foreigners. I guess once you establish residency in Canada then you'd be eligible.
2 :
Nobody in Canada gets "free" healthcare.
3 :
you must be a Canadian citizen or a legal permanent resident to get health care in Canada
4 :
People living legally and working in Canada are eligible. There is private insurance for students through the universities. You pay a fee.
5 :
Are you aware you can be on your parents insurance until age 26?

Illegal U.S immigrant, get into Canada with student visa possible?
I am a senior in high school wanting to study Law in Canada. I am illegal in the U.S though. Can I apply for a student visa? If denied how could I get into Canada if I was born in Venezuela. Thank you and please no rude answers. I have a Venezuelan passport but I live in the U.S, so should I go back to Venezuela and from there go to Canada or would it work if I go from here with a Venezuelan passport to Canada? Sorry for all the question's but I really have to know.

You need a passport to get into Canada now, and since you are illegal, I doubt you would get one without being found out. Good luck.
2 :
I would not advise applying for a student visa, you will be denied and possible deported. I reall am not sure how you can get into Canada. All you need is a passport so if you have one they will just let you walk across the border it will be fine.
3 :
go back to Venezuela and then apply for visa, you cant apply from US and you may face deportion.

So my friend has a student visa to the usa, and his family is going to canada, can he go there and come back perfectly fine with no problems? My friends from columbia, and he's coming to the us tomorrow, and wants to leave on wednesday to canada, how long does it take to get a visa to canada?

you need a passport from your own country
2 :
Sure if he also has a passport if coming by plane (or car)or some other form of ID if coming by car (like a photo ID driver's licence or birth cert etc) Good Luck``
3 :
He'll need his passport, the student visa in good order and unexpired, and a tourist visa to enter Canada for his vacation.
4 :
Your friend will need their passport, an unexpired F1 visa (for re-entry into the U.S.), their I-20 (with the 3rd page signed by the DSO) and of course a separate visa to Canada if they are citizens of country which requires one.

This obviously depends on where you live, but if you're on the East Coast can't go wrong with Montreal. Heard torward St. Catherine's St. and enjoy.
2 :
montreal, vancouver, or toronto. that's it, no other possible place to be except one of those for the weekend
3 :
Halifax, Nova Scotia, has the best atmosphere for partying students, and you can get a cheap place to stay at a university residence. See www.thecoast.ca for events. There's bound to be something going on. Try the local beers while you're there.

Montreal, Ottawa, or Edmonton.

What travel documents does an International student need to travel within Canada?

What travel documents does an International student need to travel within Canada?
Hi, I am an International student in Toronto and would like to fly to Vancouver for a couple weeks. I wanted to know if my passport is sufficient ID for me to travel on. I received an extension on my study permit but have lost it. Will that be a problem? Thank you very much.
Other - Canada - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
just a student visa, passport, and school information. you should be able to get another permit but a may take awhile.
2 :
Well, you should replace your documentation for your study permit but to travel within Canada you will probably not need it. To fly within Canada you have to be able to prove who you are which, under Transport Canada regulations, you must have a valid piece of government issued photo ID which a passport is. For a complete list you can check the Transport Canada website (link below)
3 :
In Canada? You don't even need a passport, as long as you have some kind of photo ID. You aren't crossing any international borders and there are no checkpoints between the provinces and territories.
4 :
For a flight within the country, any government photo ID is enough; your passport is more than enough. They don`t check residency status for a domestic flight.

As an international student in Canada, how much income tax can i get back?
I have a work permit at the moment and i'm doing an internship which is a part of my University Degree, so i'm still enrolled as a full time student but i'm actually working full time, 40 hrs a week making around $45k a year (before income tax deduction). I started working in May 08. Is it true that I can get all of it back when i file for taxes this year?? That would be so cool...
Canada - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
I dont think so. The CRA only requires that you are a resident, not a citizen in order to be responsible for taxes. You can call the CRA annonymously to find out.
2 :
As a non-resident, you are taxed in Canada on your Canada-sourced income. You need to file a tax return here. However, you may be able to take a Foreign Tax Credit on the tax return of your country of origin for the tax paid here. You don't say where else you pay taxes. Also, the fact that you started working half way through the year means it's likely that too much payroll taxes have been withheld, so you probably will get a partial refund.

How difficult it is to get a job in Canada for a University student from some other country?
how difficult? Exactly! * My English is Perfect! *I can design websites. *I am athletic, strong so i can do any kind labor work.
Studying Abroad - 2 Answers

1 :
No one can answer that question "exactly" without details. If you are medical student going for your PhD. If so, you'll get a work permit as part of your medical internship program and there will almost certainly be a job waiting for you. If you are an unskilled person barely able to speak French or English, then your chances of finding a job and getting a work permit are pretty much zero. What skills do you have? What type of work experience to you have? Which university are you studying at? How is your English or French? Are you looking for work over the summer or part time work while going to university? Does your university program have a coop (which accepts foreign students) or does it have some type of work study program? Is this a graduate program or undergraduate program (can you work for a professor in say research)? Are you looking for reasonable pay or merely work experience (i.e. go work for a charity?) Have you lived in the area before? Do you have family or friends to help you source jobs? How much time do you have to look for a job, etc. In terms of getting a work visa while you are student, it fairly easy if the job is related to your school work, if it is on campus (many jobs there don't even require a visa), or if you have a valid job offer. In terms of finding a job... that comes down to your skills, training, experience, where you are, the type of job, etc.
2 :
Usually a student is allowed to work around 20 hours a week while on a student visa. Difficulty in finding one depends on which city/town your university is in. Most succeed providing their English (or French) is intelligible.

I'm an engineering student in Egypt, and I want to emigrate to Canada as a refugee...?
I want to continue my studies there, what shall I do? I heard that they would provide me a caregiver, and find me a job to live there. Would Canada support me as a student refugee there? Until I become a resident or a citizen?
Immigration - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Refugee from what? Canada's refugee system is not geared to people who just want to go to school, it is aimed at those who are fleeing persecution or war. You do not appear to qualify. Go to your closest Canadian Embassy, they can provide you with information on eligibility for a student visa. But as a student, you will be expected to support yourself while in Canada. Even refugees do not receive government support to go to school, any more than Canadian citizens do. All the refugee system will do is give you income support until you have a job.
2 :
If you have financial problems, claiming as a refugee isnt going to work because you will have to pay the govt back eventually. Instead, since you have the education, apply as a skilled worker in MB or Sask. These provinces offer free provincal enterance, and if youhave friends or family here that can give you a hand, even better. If you are jewish, see the Jewish federation, they can support you. Check out their websites. Maybe this would be an other option instead of claiming as a refugee www.immigrationmanitoba.ca www.immigration.gov.sk.ca and further info, if still liking the refugee idea, ry: ww.cic.gc.ca

What financial aid is available to a US student studying in Canada?

What financial aid is available to a US student studying in Canada?
Is aid available via US federal aid (i.e. FAFSA), and/or is aid available from Canadian sources?
Financial Aid - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
You don't need financial aid! Coming from the States where they charge you an arm and leg for some college education, Canadian tuitions should be mere pocket change! Sure we don't boast any top of the line institutions like Harvard or Yale, but you wouldn't have made it to those schools anways, right? :)
2 :
There are over 100 schools in Canada that participate in the US Federal Student Aid Program (so you, as a US Citizen or US Permanent Resident can receive US financial aid to attend). To find out which ones participate, go to www.fafsa.ed.gov and select "Search for school codes" under the #1 column. After selecting the 2008-09 year and that you are "searching" rather than "verifying", select "Canada" for the first drop-down box "What state is the school in?" (I know Canada isn't a state, but that's how you'll get your info...) Good Luck!
3 :
Absolutely! Most Canadian universities and many Canadian colleges are approved by the U.S. Department of Education making students eligible for the U.S. Stafford Loan and their parents eligible for the Parents PLUS loan. The list of all regonized Canadian schools can be found via a link on the "Finding Your School" page in the website below. The website will also provide you with all the information you need to transition to a postsecondary education in Canada. The information includes the differences between the U.S. and Canadian educational systems, how to complete the FAFSA, how to search for your school of choice (by province, region or program of study), the documentation you need, what you need to join the student work program if you want a job while studying, and even a suggested packing list! If you have any questions along the way, they answer almost immediately when you complete the Feedback form. Happy exploring!

Yes, it is entirely possible. Canadian schools, though not well-known in the U.S. are certainly valid as they meet any standards you will need. Medical schools in the U.S. would certainly accept a degree from a Canadian school. You would still need to write the MCAT and have good marks but it shouldn't be a hurdle to study in Canada. As an FYI, Canadian medical schools are quite good as well, and generally as a whole rank higher than those in the U.S. because SOME of the American schools are sub-standard, whereas the relatively few in number in Canada are all held to high standards. This is a major reason why American hospitals try to recruit Canadian-trained doctors - the know they will be up to standards. Furthermore, education is subsidized in Canada and, while Canadians clearly get the majority of the benefits, international students would still pay a tuition at medical schools that is FAR below those of American schools (Univeristy of Toronto medical school, which is the largest in North America, has a tuition for Canadians of less than $20,000 per year. Although it may be more for an international student, it would not be anywhere near the $50,000 tuition seen at some American schools). Your undergrad will be cheaper as well. Hope this helps

You need to apply for a student Visa before you try to fly into the country. You can't get one when you land. You also need to prove you have been accepted by a school in Canada.
2 :
If you're planning on staying in Canada for 6 months or less then you don't need a visa, but if you're actually planning on coming here and studying for the entire duration of a course at a college or university, then you need to obtain a student visa BEFORE coming to Canada. You have to send in an application along with a passport photo and biometric information, and allow the Canadian government to do a background check.
3 :
It's not quite that simple. First you have to apply to a Canadian school and be accepted, then you have to apply to Canadian Immigration for a student visa, and then you fly into the country. I don't know who told you you could get a student visa at the border, but it isn't so.

Especially negative thoughts about people. They almost seem to be able to read you mind, gestures and facial expressions that come out when you think negatively about them or even life. I would definitely look up some things on positive psychology, attitudes, people/social skills and the like. It seems that you and I just have to learn the hard way, but everything broke for me when I decided to help people and developed intuition. We all use intuition more than we realize, but learning how to do it right shifted everything in my life to the better. I think it will have that affect on everyone. Here's a hint as to it's importance in thinking straight: http://intuition.viviti.com I attribute all my troubles from not listening to my intuition and learning how to use it.

Geology Student Going to Canada: Where to go?

Geology Student Going to Canada: Where to go?
I'm a geology student that will be traveling all over Canada by Rail this summer. Where Should I go? I'm planning on Spending a few days in Toronto and Montreal on my way out to Halifax with a day or so in Truro. From Halifax I'll go where is easily accessible by bus. Then on my return I plan to spend another day or so in Toronto and stopping in Jasper before heading back to Vancouver. Can anyone recommend sights, hostels, activities to do in any of the names cities or locations??
Other - Canada - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
If you are a geology student you should try to go to Drumheuller Alberta. Alberta - especially around Calgary would be a great place to visit. Do not expect to to find a place in a Youth Hostel, they are full in the summer.
2 :
I would definitely recommend going to Banff, Alberta. I think its just a bit south of Jasper and it's absolutely beautiful!! We went there almost 5 years ago but I still remember it. We stayed at a good hostel, and although I can't remember the name there was a restaurant attached to it called Cougar Pete's, so I'm sure if you searched that you could find it. It had great rates and a huge stone fire place. Oh and I'm from Ottawa and I would also suggest you come here. It's a biggish city but not as huge and crazy as Toronto and Montreal. There's also a lot of activities and festivals here all the time, try the Ottawa kiosk website if you would like more information. Other places in Canada I would recommend are Quebec city (because of its beautiful European style) and Nova Scotia, specifically Peggy's Cove (cove with a big light house) because its really fun to climb all the rocks and since you're a geology student you may like that. Anyways I hope this helped, have a great trip!
3 :
What are your areas of interest in geology--glaciology, stratigraphy, paleontology, vulcanism, or something else? Where you should go depends on that. The north, huge area, is the world's chief examplar of continental glaciology. The Rockies are great for stratigraphy and paleontology. BC has some excellent areas to look at vulcanology--for example Garibaldi Prov. Park just north of Vancouver enroute to Whistler is an easy place to go to see a volcanic cone and landscape as well as mountain glaciers in action. Or go to northern Alberta to see (hideous) oil sands mining near Ft. McMurray. That is but a tiny sample from a long list of sites in Canada with immense geological interest. The cross country train trip from Toronto via Jasper to Vancouver allows views of the Canadian Shield, the prairies, the Rockies, and the Coastal Mountains and provides a good, if incomplete, overview of Canadian geology. Get a good book on Canadian geology/geomorphology and use it to plan your trip!
4 :
The Canadian Rockies are awesome - a thrust belt, Drumheller is a must in Western Canada - Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology and Dinosaur Provincial Park. I'm a retired geologist starting a geo-eco-tour biz in Drumheller - if you are coming this way email me. Free tours for students.

You don't need to do anything with your visa as long as you get accepted. Since you are already in post-secondary education, you are free to change schools/institutes as long as your study permit is valid.
2 :
It turns out Ken is right - he really should have used a link as proof. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/faq/study/study-faq13.asp However, if you are enrolled in a post-secondary program (doing studies after the high school level), you may change your school, level, program and field of studies without applying for a new study permit. You don̢۪t need to apply for a change to the condition of your study permit either. You may continue to use your study permit as long as it is valid.

your american visa means nothing to canada if you have a green card you can drive across the border with photo ID and proof of US residency.....................if you fly to canada you must have a passport and a visa if needed if you are not a US resident you may need a visa to visit canada, it will depend on which country issued your passport

Moving from Canada to Austrailia as a student - good idea?

Moving from Canada to Austrailia as a student - good idea?
I currently live in Canada, and i am saving money to move to Australia. But I was wondering if it was a better idea to go to university in Australia and move there right after high school, or go to University here then move there and look for a job. Thanks!

what are the possible reasons for student visa rejection in canada?

what are the possible reasons for student visa rejection in canada?
I have heard, conditional acceptance is a weak point for student visa application. Is that right?

Not at all. Conditional acceptance is given for many reasons and has little bearing on the outcome of a visa application. Common reasons for a denial are: lack of financial funds and lack of ties to your home country. Others can include poor grades, which indicates that one is not a serious student and poor language/communications skills which would hinder a person's ability to learn in an advanced classroom environment. The reasons are numerous, ranging from the serious to the petty such as incorrectly completed forms and unsatisfactory answers at the interview.

how can i become a student in canada?

how can i become a student in canada?
i'm currently enrolled in a community college in the states, and obviously would not be able to transfer to a university. the school i'm attending unfortunately has little to no desire to take the time to explain this process to me. so if anyone here has any advice, or references for me, i'd appreciate it. if i'm in community college, can i study abroad? is there financial assistance? how long does this process take?

First, don't go thinking that since we have a much smaller population, that our schools are less prestigious and easier to get into. This is definitely NOT the case. We have many well-known and internationally prestigious schools (I can name 6 only an hour away from me). You will be competing against other Canadian students, not to mention foreigners like yourself. In the States, you use your SATs and whatnot (I'm not entirely sure how the States' system works) to be eligible for university or college. In Canada, we gain entry into school based on marks in high school (or, community college in your case). You will need a high school diploma recognized by a Canadian school in order to gain entry, plus the marks to prove it. I'm doing some research into the mark requirements now, and here's the average that I've found: Liberal art or similar degress: Mid 70s to Mid 80s Business and commerce: Low 80s to Mid 90s Hard sciences (bio, chem, physics, etc.): Mid 80s to High 90s Law & Social sciences: Low 80s to Mid 90s Engineering and architecture (like stuff): Mid 90s to 100 Many schools do offer international programs, so just check that yourself. I'm not sure if the States will financially assist you, but we Canadians use the CSLP (Canadian Students Loans Program) to help with tuition and other costs. Good luck :) P.S. You may need to take a French course.
